The Glossary will be added as a second Appendix to the Interim Technical Report and submitted as part of an ANSI document.

Liaison Activities

This meeting was held concurrently with OMG BOMSIG. X3H7 presented an update on status of ISO proposal for development of a RM-ODP Companion Standard on the Enterprise Viewpoint.

Jeff Sutherland has been designed as the BOMSIG X3H7 liaison by Robert Shelton, Chair of OMG BOMSIG. X3H7, under X3 rules, cannot have a formal liaison with OMG, but is free to work closely with OMG groups for standards development.

Chronological Details of Meeting Discussions:

Sunday, 25 Jun 95

1:00 Meeting convened

Glenn Hollowell, Chair, opened the meeting. A participant list can be found in the Executive Summary.

MOTION: Minutes of previous meeting X3H7-95-16 approved by unanimous consent.

Jeff lead discussion on RM-ODP Enterprise Viewpoint Companion Standard.

OOPSLA Workshop Discussions

OMG is being reorganized. What are now the SIGS will be elevated to a vertical enterprise application group at the same level as the horizontal technology supported by Task Forces. They want to set up an architecture committee that will be a bridge between the two. What standards would be useful across domain areas? At the August Object World a recommendation will be made to the OMG Board on reorganization by the OMG Process Committee. It will be up to the SIG whether they become a Task Force. There are membership requirements for participating in development of RFPs.

An overview of the implications of the reorganization was presented by Michael Brodie at the BOMSIG Meeting on Monday.

Brodie, Michael T. OMG Technology in Support of Application Interoperability Under OMG's Proposed Reorganization. White Paper, June 22, 1995.

X3H7 should be clear that we want to work with OMG to bring enterprise architecture standards into the accreditation process with whatever committees or task forces emerge in any reorganization. This would include BOMSIG, the Object Model Subcommittee, and a new architecture committee is one is formed (Glenn).

New consortium: 10 large organizations like Microsoft, Lotus, SAP, etc. have formed Object Applications Group (OAG). Have dropped off radar screen.

X3H7 proposes to become the TAG for an RM-ODP Enterprise Viewpoint Companion Standard. Right now we cannot, according to X3 rules, have any official relationship with OMG. If we have an ISO work product, we can form a liaison with OMG thorough that mechanism.

A discussion ensued as to what is the value of X3H7 working with OMG on standardization. They already have a Class C formal relationship with ISO. If X3H7 receives ISO support, they can work with OMG on standards with an Enterprise flavor.

Tom Frost, the acting Chair of OMC, should be consulted (Rudolf). Tom Rutt will be making the official proposal.

Glenn with go to ISO Ottawa meeting as a delegate. Two people from NIST will also be going.

The X3H7 proposal was modified slightly to meet the recommendations of X3T3, and will be submitted as an X3T3 proposal to ISO. Some detail was taken out to avoid raising issues peripheral to the proposal.

Workshop chairs should look at Andersen Consulting specification languages presented at last OMG TC meeting (Colin Scott from the Eagle Project). There is a document number on the OMG server for this.

2:10 OOPSLA Workshop - Richard Due (presented by Glenn Hollowell)

Copy of the announcement was circulated. Richard needs to recruit participation by Email as does Jeff. There is a lot of competition for getting good papers because of the number of workshops.

2:10 Future Meeting Dates

October meeting will start at 1PM on Wednesday and go for the next two days. We may adjourn at noon on Friday depending on work. Meeting fees will be taken care of by Sematech. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Wyndam Hotel. Ask for the Sematech X3H7 block of rooms. Rate is $75 per night. It is not one of the OOPSLA hotels. It is on the far south side of Austin. Those participating in OOPSLA may want to move to an OOPSLA hotel over the weekend. You can stay at the Wyndam at Sematech rates if you want to stay there through OOPSLA. There will probably not be an OOPSLA bus from the Wyndam. Cab ride will probably be $6-7 each way between Wyndam and the OOPSLA convention center.

We have an invitation from X3J21 Ford representative to meet in conjunction with X3J21 at Dearborn in April 95.

We will table the meeting date discussion until Wednesday evening at 5-7PM. Our host (TANDEM) will arrange another room for us.

2:30 Turning the Interim Report into an ANSI Document

3:00 Liaison Reports

X3H4 - Robert Hodges

X3H4 is trying to recast itself as a next generation repository standards committee. Jerry Winkler, the Chair, got a news release out describing the new direction and call for participation in "Open Repository Systems Committee". More visibility and more participation is required to build critical mass to do work required.

X3H4 will ally with the OMG Applications Specification group. The relationship with the PCTE groups is not yet clear.

A draft of a proposed OMG RFI for a Common Repository Facility is available. Is anyone building a repository from collections of object components? Focus is on meta-data for components. How do you capture meta-data on business objects? X3H4 will adopt the OMG model and get a specification based on products that exist.

If X3H4 can gain support for this, the committee should collaborate with X3H7. Managing your information assets is the focus of X3H7, modeling enterprise objects.

There is an opportunity for collaboration with the OMG Architecture Committee and the OMG Object Model Committee. X3H4 is interested in how to represent a variety of object models in a consistent way.

A proposed change to the X3 rules for voting privileges recommends alternate criteria for an organization to maintain voting privileges. Anyone that teleconferences in could be counted for attendance. Doing some real work for the committee, rather than just attending the meeting would also allow membership.

Where should we address the object model interoperability issues?

4:20 Adjourn until Wednesday afternoon at 5PM.
